Artist's Statement
In 2003, a couple commissioned me to produce a portrait. Pat is a collage artist and her late husband Don became a passionate bike rider in his retirement. Pat’s studio was in their basement along side Don’s riding gear. Because their interests intersected in the basement I decided to create a series of photographs in that space.
I spent the better part of two days roaming through the room being careful not to disturb any of the pieces laid out on Pat’s work table or Don’s equipment that lined the basement walls. The only light source I chose to use was the bit of daylight that shimmered through the long thin basement windows high above the objects being photographed. I created four images that would become their portrait. In essence these four photographs are a meditation of the beauty and discovery found in long relationships.
